Copywright 1998-1999 beanpoleA few good Lep Books
Animal Instinct
- I don't own a copy (sob!), but from what I've seen, this has EXCELLENT pictures. It's supposed to be the complete story of Def Leppard up to Hysteria. And it looked to be an actual story that wouldn't appeal to people who don't like to read. It's out of print so you're best luck for finding it is a second-hand bookstore.
Def Leppard CD Book
by Jason Rich - I have a copy of this that came with a limited edition picture CD featuring an interview with Joe Elliot and Rick Allen that came out just before the release of Hysteria. The book goes up to the release of Retro Active. The book is also the size of a CD and only 120 pages long with lots of colored pics, so a non-reader can find lots of info on Def Leppard without spending forever on a book.
Def Leppard Two Steps Ahead
by Dave Bowler and Bryan Dray - This should only be attempted by a book reader. It has 140+ pages and a seperate small section of black and white pics. I haven't yet finished this one - I just skimmed it - but it goes up to the release of Slang. The authors are British and the discography is only for the UK. It's a pretty good book so far with lots of little info that the die-hard Def Leppard fans will really love.
Biographize The Def Leppard Story
by Dave Dickson - Another book to be attempted by only true readers, 200+ pages. Another section of black and white photos in the middle, but I think these are better. This book only goes until 1995, and appears again to be written by a British author. Looks to be very thorough, especially about the beginnings of the band.
Def Leppard No Safety Net
by Chris Collingwood - If you only want to purchase one book on Def Leppard, make it this one. The pictures are phenomanal!!!!! (yes, I know that don't look right, but I ain't got a dictionary) This is 140+ pages, but a lot are full pictures, at least 8x10 inches. Towards the end, it gives some pretty in-depth info on Vivian Campbell. It only includes info up till Retro Active and the discography is only for the UK. But the pictures . . . !!
Other Miscellaneous Appearances
Def Leppard on Rockline
- August 9, 1993, found me listening to Lazer 103 to hear Def Leppard live on Rockline, particularly eager to hear from Rick Allen, my fave member. For those of you outside North America, Rockline is a live radio broadcast that allows fans to call in and ask Def Leppard (or other rock bands) their questions. On this particular evening, Rick Allen was not in the New York studio - only 4 people could fit so he took the night off. I waited to hear it for almost nothing. The hour and a half show (although only just over an hour with commercials) introduced the world to "Desert Song" off Retro Active. The band also played "Two Steps Behind" and "From the Inside" live. Rick did actually call in. And Vivian just couldn't keep from mentioning the band's obsession with nakedness, claiming that the band gets naked at every opportunity. Every time I listen, I chuckle.
Live Broadcast from California
- The Slang premiere came from California's ZBT frat house. The first part of the broadcast included an interview with Rick Allen, Vivian Campbell, and Phil Collen. The second part interviewed Joe Elliot and Sav, and they even had a third part where they performed live: "Work it Out", "Rocket", "Armegeddon It", and "Pour Some Sugar on Me". Throughout the first two parts they played songs off Slang: "Truth?", "Turn to Dust", "Work it Out", "Deliver Me", "All I Want is Everything", and "Gift of Flesh". I have this funny feeling that Vivian brought up nakedness again. And this fabulous broadcast was also brought to me by Lazer 103.
VH1 Behind the Music
- First airing in June of 1998, the whole Behind the Music series is just about digging up dirt. And boy does Def Leppard have a lot of it! I know it may be hard to hear some of the harsh things like all the drugs, partying, drinking, and women, but this is really what Def Leppard was about. I say WAS. Not that I've ever been there, but Sheffield was supposedly a place where drinking was a social event so every member of Def Leppard could have been on their way to alcoholism. The hour long show (again that's with commercials) deals with Rick's accident, Steve's death, drinking and drugs, and the future of Def Leppard. I got my first peak at the "Slang" video. I know they never released that one here. Oh well, I'll just have to wait for another video collection. If you can catch it, it's worth watching.
WalMart
- The boys had 8,000 show up at a Texas Wal Mart for a little jam session and record signing. They were promoting the release of Euphoria. They were supposed to stay 2 hours, but they stayed longer to sign all the albums. At the same time of the signing, Joe was on the phone for a chat on AOL. He was asked various questions posted on AOL and someone transcribed his answer. He talked mainly about the new album (duh!). Joe did happen to mention that they still have one track left that Steve Clark contributed to. But they don't know if they plan to release it.
Howard Stern
- Not much to mention except that on June 11th, they were on Howard Stern's morning show. It still haven't seen it the Howard Stern Show on E!, but that doesn't mean it won't be shown there. I saw it on his regular show on CBS. Def Leppard came on the last few minutes to play. Howard Stern thinks Rick Allen rocks on drums. Who knew? He was saying that Ringo would need 3 arms to play so well. : ) They played "Pour Some Sugar on Me" accoustically - but I can only imagine what they talked about!
Def Leppard on Rockline
- Well, July 12th, 1999, had me listening to Lazer 103 again to hear them on Rockline. Joe, Viv, and Sav showed up to talk about the new album. I'll attempt to have more on this after I listen to the tape again. (Yes, of course I recorded it.) I'm still P.O.'d that Rick Allen once again was absent. But I thought it was cool that one of the members of the Scorpions called in with a question.
Def Leppard on Storytellers
- Even if MTV has ignored Def Leppard, VH1 still keeps them played. This will first air on October 10th at 10pm (Eastern US time) immediately followed by the premiere of the "Goodbye" video. Storytellers gives the artist a chance to tell a live audience (and TV viewers) about the songs before they play them live.
